SANDS OF TIME

This is a story of someone down on his luck and was inspired from a friends’
passage through a very dark period in his life. It contains elements to which
we can all probably relate.

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar, electric rhythm guitar, bottleneck electric guitar, mandolin & back-up vocals
Timmy Scott - lead vocals & bass guitar
Eric Northenscold - electric guitar leads
Bob Sevart - drum set & percussion

When you’re tired and you’re beat and you don’t have enough to eat
Do you think your life and luck has just passed you by?
It’s a drag for your mind and the end isn’t far behind
Now your life is a-running out like the sands of time

Yearn for the youth that you once suffered
Take back the lies that have you blind
For your friends and your past
Will collect and catch up at last
And your life is a-running out like the sands of time

When you’re down on your luck and you don’t give a flying fuck
Will you cry for the love and the years that have passed you by?
Could it be more the truth and the pain issues from your youth
Now you’re life is a-running out like the sands of time

Yearn for the youth that you once suffered
Cast off the chains and ties that bind
For your lies and your past will collect and catch up at last
Now you cry with the only voice that sooths your mind
Then your love turns to hate
And your judgment now awaits
Yes your life is a-running out like the sands of time

Now you stand at the door and you can’t carry on no more
And you think you’ll never win and lose your mind
Every day is a fight to go on and just do what’s right
Cause your life is a-running out like the sands of time

Is it you is it me carrying on never to be free?
And the hate and the spite has won and now rules your life
Get a grip on yourself
Shake it off and replace with health
Since your life is a-running out like the sands of time

Yearn for the youth that you once suffered
Run from the truth or lose your mind
For your present and your past
Will collect and catch up at last
Now you pay with the only soul that’s left you blind
Then your love turns to hate
And the reaper now awaits
Yes your life is a-running out like the sands of time

BOTH SIDES THE TWEED

This is a traditional Scottish piece written in the early 1700s and more recently reworked by
singer Dick Gaughan and later performed by the well-known Irish vocalist Mary Black.
Its’ message and haunting quality is timeless, and speaks of the corruption involved in the
negotiations leading up to the Act of Union of 1707 which linked Scotland and England
on terms which nationalists believe did much damage to Scottish culture.

The tone of the song, however, is conciliatory and may be read as a reaction against the anti-
Englishness of some Scottish nationalistic songs. The title refers to the River Tweed
which marks the border between Scotland and England.

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar & mandolin
Susanna Fuller - vocals
Rob Witmer - accordion
Paul Elliott - violin

(Words and music by Dick Gaughan. Published by Happy Valley Music and used under license)

What's the spring-breathing jasmine and rose?
What's the summer with all its gay train?
Or the splendor of autumn to those
Who've bartered their freedom for gain?

Let the love of our lands’ sacred rights
To the love of our people succeed
Let friendship and honor unite
And flourish on both sides the Tweed.

No sweetness the senses can cheer
Which corruption and bribery bind
No brightness that gloom can e'er clear
For honor’s the sum of the mind

Let virtue distinguish the brave
Place riches in lowest degree
Think them poorest who can be a slave
Them richest who dare to be free

CLICHÉS

As a guitarist, I have amassed many little musical clichés over the years,
which have fought their way to the surface in this little instrumental.

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar

LONG TIME OF THE NIGHT

All of us have deep emotional longings which represent love lost or gained at some
point in our lives.  This is simply one way to convey these feelings we all share.

Rande Reed - 12 string acoustic guitar
Timmy Scott - vocals & bass guitar
Warren Wiegratz - Soprano sax, flute & keyboards
Bob Sevart - drum set & percussion

Dreaming of you in the long time of the night
Feeling so good when my arms holding you tight
Missing you now ‘cause you’re so fine
Want to make love in the sunshine
Dreaming of you in the long time of the night

Touch of your skin makes my heart leap with delight
Scent of your breath on my soul keeps me alive
Seeing the warmth in your eyes
Searching for you all my life
Dreaming of you in the long time of the night

Sound of your voice gives my spirit peace through the night
Glow of your smile in my mind fills me with pride
Missing you now ‘cause you’re so fine
Want to make love in the sunshine
Dreaming of you in the long time of the night

RANDES’ GROOVE

Rande Reed - electric guitars
Warren Wiegratz - tenor sax, Fender Rhodes & synthesizer
Len Czajka - bass guitar
Bob Sevart - drum set & percussion

Here’s a fusion instrumental I wrote back in the 80’s and only now had the
means to finish and bring it up to date. At the time I was listening a lot
to bands such as Spyro Gyra and Tom Scott.

SING THE SONG

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar & vocals
Susanna Fuller - vocals

This is more or less a rambling look at why I choose to write and record music.
The lyrics emanated from a place within me that’s still somewhat of a mystery!

Make the choice and let the sounds begin
Feel the rush of promise that you'll win

Let the life that flows shine bright from inside you
Make the chords sing bold and never decay
So reveal your past leave nothing behind you
And you'll soon be on your way

Sing the song don't be long

Pound the drum and let the rhythms free
Loose your voice for purpose meant to be

Make the words speak loud for what is inside you
Let the theme ring strong as night into day
For the time grows short as days fall behind you
And you'll soon be lost on your way

Sing the song don't be long

Start with your voice and share the gift to make the choice
To love and care and if you dare to wear
A frown or smile

Then comes the song and even if you sing along
Let those who've come to be a friend step in
Not when, but now.

SONG OF THE SEA

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar & vocals
Rob Witmer - concertina
Paul Elliott - violin
Cary Black - bass guitar
Bob Sevart – percussion

The worlds’ most dangerous profession is said to be crab fishing in the Bering Sea off Alaska
in the winter season. The hardy individuals who choose this way of life risk many dangers
in the treacherous conditions. My inspiration comes from these brave souls
and this is my tribute to them.

Out where the wind blows the sailors departing
A days run from the harbor where the sky meets the sea
There you will find them the season it’s starting
The crew, they go a-sailing where they wanted to be

The Skipper, he’s trimming, the crew chief’s a-grinning
The deckhands, they’re restless for they long to set sail
The diesel, it’s starting, they’ll soon be departing
A-tied there on land, why, their souls are in jail

He sails so far from home, danger lurks where they roam
Working the decks for all day and all night
Telling his family, “I must go – pray for me
Leave now I must, for we sail at first light”

The gale it blows harder, the ship tosses starboard
The men are all tired and want to be fed
The sea, it grows rougher, the crabbing gets tougher
The Skipper shouts “Haul Ye”, and the crew needs their bed

Out where the whales they roam, heavy seas white with foam
Winds freeze their hands but the crew shows no fright
Casting their pots at will, hoping their holds they fill
Risking their lives as they work through the night

Now through the harbor they make for the markers
A-ready for action since crabbing’s their life
The crew knows the feeling, a catch they’ll be reeling
Another year older for the sea’s their first wife

MAXINES’ WALTZ

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar

Here’s a little lullaby dedicated to my late mother, Maxine Reed,
who introduced me to the world of music at the tender age of 5.

DREAMIN’

Rande Reed - acoustic guitars
Susanna Fuller - vocals
Rob Witmer - accordion
Len Czajka - bass guitar
Dave Harmonson - pedal steel guitar
Bob Sevart - percussion

A rather serendipitous look at matters of the heart.

Lately, I’ve been dreaming of you
I’m sure now that I love you
Till now, it’s been a journey of uncertainty
But you said, however long, you would wait for me

I’ve never been more sure than this
I can’t wait till I feel your kiss
Tonight, wait for me, I’m making my way to you
So right, you and I, there’s a lot of catching up to do

Your kiss, your touch, I have wanted so much
I belong to you, you belong to me
You’ve always known my heart would give up the fight
I’ll be in your arms from now on tonight. Never alone.

I love you, I need you
I’m coming. I’m coming back to you
Wait for me.

TWO YOUNG LOVERS

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar
Susanna Fuller - vocals
Rob Witmer - accordion
Paul Elliott - violin
Len Czajka - bass guitar

Years ago I remember reading a bizarre news story of a young couple so in love that
they decided committing suicide together would be the ultimate romantic act.
In fact, it was said to spawn a whole rash of like-minded individuals who did away
with themselves in a similar fashion and created a sort of “suicide club”.
This tune is my little black comedy about the event.

Now he sailed o’er the seas from Galway
And his life was so happy and gay
Since he knew that one day he would wed
So he seized on a master plan
That became known throughout the land
And would live in loves’ infamy

So he lay there losing his life
Trying to hide in his pride
And his senseless act of suicide
Burning inside as he cried
Then he died

Now she came from a land far away
And her heart sang so happy and gay
For her love and her spirit were with him
So she quietly planned her doomsday
As she lay there and silently pray
To be one and to die there with him

So she lay there losing her life
Trying to hide in her pride
And her senseless act of suicide
Burning inside as she cried
Then she died

So they made their pact one fine day
In the hills overlooking the bay
Knowing soon that their love would be complete
Now the wind blows over their graves
And the rain falls as tears wash away
All the grief and the sorrow
From this sad tale

So they lay there losing their lives
Trying to hide in their pride
And their senseless act of suicide
Burning inside as they cried

Yes they lay there losing their lives
Trying to hide in their pride
And their senseless use of cyanide
Burning inside as they cried
Then they died

SATURDAY NIGHT

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar, vocals
Susanna Fuller - vocals
Rob Witmer - accordion
Paul Elliott - violin
Len Czajka - bass guitar
Bob Sevart - drum set & percussion

This is about life in a small town on a Saturday night,
so stroll around with me and take in the local flavor.

Taking a stroll down the sidewalks of town
Breathing in the sweet summer air
All the sights and the sounds, as the sun settles down
A typical Saturday night

Sitting on the porch steps with a guitar
A boy sings to a girl on a swing
A passing carload of kids with the music up loud
Such possibilities of a Saturday night

From the door of the old pub, music floats on the air
Folks at dinner and on the dance floor
But the best place I stand is with you hand in hand
On a beautiful Saturday night

I’m so glad we’ve got Saturday night

SNIPPET

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar & vocals
Bob Sevart - percussion

This is an acoustic “snippet” of a much longer piece I wrote while on holiday in
the Pacific NW back in the early ‘80s. I’ve always liked this particular section.

Well I’ve got me going down this road that I’m not knowing
But I’m really going in style
‘cause I’ve got no reason to give up the way I’m living
Even though I’m living like a child

In my time
Got to go on living in my style
Got to keep on dreaming of you

The heartache of living is all that I’ve been given
And it makes me way to cry
But the dream is real and it’s just the way I feel
Even though I’m reaching for the sky

THE DREAM TO BE MYSELF

Rande Reed - electric guitar
Susanna Fuller - vocals
Len Czajka - bass guitar
Bob Sevart - drum set & percussion
String arrangement - Warren Wiegratz

This is an introspective piece about self-discovery, written from the standpoint about
foolishly attempting to follow in the footsteps of the misguided ideals seen in others
rather than following ones own path.

I stand before you now and see
The emptiness that once was me
A life that stole reality
And gave it up for naught

The years, they passed while I was lost
I never quite counted the cost
The days grew dim, my holocaust
I did not realize

That living as I heard was right
And following as day to night
To forge the path which bore the light
I lost my sense of life

And through those years I tried
To shut those feelings deep inside
The taste of bitter tears I cried
In living others lives

Through others eyes I’ve sorely seen
The thoughts and fears I’d come to be
And living therefore aimlessly
I was then so unwise

It looks alright, I understand
How me and my guitar in hand
Can sound so good and feel so grand
But that was once not so

For I fell for the biggest lie
To live my life like those I’d tried
To be like most and just survive
But now I’ve realized

That I am best when me is me
I’ll give it all it’s meant to be
And let all know I’m only just
Believing in myself

And now that I have come to see
This place that’s known so well to me
I’m finally just so free to be
Just myself alone

PRAISE

Rande Reed - bass guitar
Susanna Fuller - vocals
Steve Rice - piano
Bob Sevart - percussion

Do any of the sentiments and lyrics expressed here touch you in some way?
I have a pretty clear idea what they mean to me.

There’s a light in my vision
A night of hallowed singing
And a love that is burning in me

There’s a night of such beauty
And a song I can’t help singing
From within the depths of my soul

Oh to find the words how it feels
There is something here that is real
I close my eyes and I can touch what is here

Such a gentle sweetness
Oh, what a feeling of peace
That I’ve never known

I can look all around me
There’s so much that still astounds me
I can’t help but love this place that I’m in

I can breathe for the first time
I am free in my heart and mind
And I know that I’ve found my home

DANCE TONIGHT

Rande Reed - electric 6-string guitars, electric 12-string guitar & vocals
Len Czajka - bass guitar
Bob Sevart - drum set & percussion

This is a happy nostalgic look back at a much simpler time that many grew up in.
Come now and revisit the carefree days when life was all about cars, girls,
the malt shop, and hanging out with your schoolmates.

Going to a party and a picture show
Come on out and dance tonight
Gonna grab my girlfriend ‘cause she wants to go
Making everything alright

Gassing up my Chevy, man it’s almost time
Come on out and dance tonight
Racing at the red light for the quarter mile
Dodging every cop in sight

Come on out and dance tonight
Come on out and dance tonight
Everything will be alright
Come out and party tonight

Stopping at the malt shop for a soda or two
Come on out and dance tonight
Making conversation with the high school crew
Everyone is feeling fine

Watching all the carhops as they skate on by
Come on out and dance tonight
Gonna grab a burger with a plate of fries
Man that food is outta sight
Come on out and dance tonight
Come on out and dance tonight
Everything will be alright
Come out and party tonight

What can I do, what can I say?
Being with you, so fine today
Holding your hand, feeling real fine
Knowing you’re here, making you mine

Kicking off our shoes on the school gym floor
Come on out and dance tonight
Danny’s getting drunk and now he’s talking mean
Looking for a real good fight

Sally’s getting jealous of the new Prom Queen
Come on out and dance tonight
Looking real pretty in her tight blue jeans
Man that girl is such a fright

Come on out and dance tonight
Come on out and dance tonight
Everything will be alright
Come out and party tonight

THE SUN AND THE RAIN

Rande Reed - acoustic guitar & vocals
Eric Goetz - piano
Warren Wiegratz - flute
Cary Black - bass guitar
Bob Sevart - drum set & percussion

This is a rather introspective piece which most of us can relate to in some way.
The arrangement is inspired by one of my most profound musical influences.

Isn’t it lucky, all I’ve done?
Places I’ve gone, friends I’ve known
Yet I still wonder what its cost
Reaching for love as I’ve grown

All’s fair in the game
Every heartache’s the same
Trusting could get one double-crossed
Gone like the end of day

All through the sun and the rain
All for the joy and the pain
All of the love that my heart stands to gain
All of the joy that my soul can sustain
All down the years when I cried for the truth and tomorrow

Suffering in silence, deep in though
Taking my pleasure today
Live for the moment, don’t get caught
Giving your feelings away

Well now you’re ashamed
Telling your friends of your pain
Hiding it doesn’t count a lot
Not if you’ve much to gain

THE SUN AND THE RAIN (REPRISE)

Rande Reed - electric guitar
Warren Wiegratz - flute
Len Czajka - bass
Eric Goetz - keyboards
Garey Williams - drum set

Picking up from where the prior acoustic ditty left us, we now explore the electric
power chord version of this as a classic rock act would perform as their encore number.
Make sure to reset your volume to 11 for this one!
